En inicial, los niños de 3 y 4 años aprenden inglés a través del programa Jolly Phonics, el cual es un método para aprender a leer y escribir en inglés, desarrollado en el Reino Unido. Destaca el uso de tres premisas como método principal de estudio: Imagen, Movimiento y Sonido.

Este programa ayuda a nuestros estudiantes con el proceso de lectura y escritura; además de asimilar y aprender más palabras, no solo en inglés sino también en su lengua materna. El sonido y la letra son muy importantes para el aprendizaje, relacionando las palabras con una acción y los fonemas. 

Los estudiantes iniciaron su trabajo con los sonidos de las letras “S” y “A”, cantando una canción por cada letra, como “The Snake is in the Grass.” para aprender el sonido de la “S”. Una vez que los estudiantes reconocieron el sonido, a través del canto, trazaron la letra con el dedo. Adicional a ello, con la ayuda de otros materiales como plastilina, semillas, etc. continuaron reforzando el trazo de la letra. Así, nuestros estudiantes de inicial aprendieron  tres palabras del vocabulario como “snake,” “ant” y “sun.” 

Finalmente, motivados para el aprendizaje, dibujaron una de las palabras usando sus colores y materiales favoritos. Continuando con el refuerzo, se presentó una historia usando estas nuevas palabras. 

El objetivo principal con dichas actividades es retener los sonidos y las letras en su memoria a largo plazo. Además, de desarrollar sus capacidades y autonomía, al ser protagonistas de su propio aprendizaje. Así, ya son capaces de escribir la letra y adaptar estos conocimientos adquiridos y ampliar lo que saben sobre el idioma inglés.

TEACHING ENGLISH WITH THE JOLLY PHONICS PROGRAM IN PRE-KINDER (4-YEAR-OLDS)

In our Early Years program, 3- and 4-year-olds learn English through the Jolly Phonics program, which is a learning method for reading and writing in English developed in the United Kingdom. There are three main premises that form this method of study: Image, Movement and Sound.

This program helps our students with the reading and writing process; in addition to assimilation and learning more words not only in English, but also in their native language. Sounds and letters are very important for learning, relating words to actions and phonemes.

Students began their work with the sounds of the letters “S” and “A,” singing a song for each letter, such as “The Snake is in the Grass,” to learn the “S” sound. Once the students recognized the sound through singing, they traced the letter with their fingers. In addition to this, with the help of other materials such as modeling clay and seeds, they continued to reinforce the stroke of the letter. Consequently, our prekinder students learned three vocabulary words like “snake,” “ant” and “sun.”

To conlude the activity, they drew one of the words using their favorite colors and materials, and to continue with their reinforcement, a story was presented using these new words.

The main goal with these activities is to retain sounds and letters in long-term memory, as well as develop the students’ capacities and autonomy, by being the protagonists of their own learning. As a result, they are now able to write the letter, adapt this acquired knowledge and expand what they know about the English language.
